How to Select the Best Home Projector Screens for Home Theater

There is a huge amount of information out there on what speakers, receiver, televisions, wires, Blu-ray players, remotes, etc. are best for home theater. However, it is important to remember the home in home theater and address many of the non-equipment factors in fixing up a system. By making some considerations of the physical space and setup of the system, people can bring their entertainment experience from good to great.

Select the Right Projector Screens for Home Theater

The best way to authenticate the look and feel of a movie theater in your home is by using a projector screens. A home theaters screen, just like the ones used in the commercial cinemas, displays pictures thrown onto it from a video projector that’s placed either in front of it or back of it.

Although projection screens all do the same job and are extremely similar in appearance, they are far from one. Screens differ in size, shape and composition, all of which affects their ability to render the crisp, clear, accurate image. For example, while one screen might be a champ at displaying pictures in a brightly illuminated room, another screen might perform better with all the room lights off. Increasingly, the ability to combat ambient light has become a focus of manufacturers and should be a key consideration when selecting the screen for the media space.

Although dedicated theaters will always be popular more and more people for whatever purpose are choosing to incorporate home theater systems into family rooms and other existing spaces. Manufacturers of projection screens have responded by developing products that can produce bright, vivid images regardless of the room environment. In other words, the image on-screen stays crisp even when sunlight is gushing through the windows, and the room lights are on. Manufacturers often refer to these screens as owning “ambient light rejecting” technology. The technology behind a screen’s ability to combat light can be credited mainly to the composition of the screen material.

In addition to being able to reproduce the great looking picture under any lighting conditions, the uniformity characteristic of screens continues to grow. Uniformity refers to a screen’s ability to spread the projected image across its entire width so that it looks just as good at the sides as it does directly in the middle. Screens with the lower gain can do this better, so manufacturers now offer screens with gains as low as .8 or lower. The move toward better uniformity/lower gain has been leveraged by the development of super-bright projectors. The brighter the projector, the less gain a screen requires.

Screens designed for the3D content were all the rage a few years ago; now the hype is all about 4K. Again, Projector screen manufacturers have taken their cues from developments in the video projector market. As 4K projectors continue to gain steam, they have responded by the offering screen materials with an ultra-fine surface that’s able to handle the tightly packed pixel structure of high-resolution 4K projectors, without any image degradation. Expect increasingly refined fabrics from the screen manufacturers to the emerge as 4K becomes more popular and 8K projectors start hitting the market.

Projector screens that resemble flat-panel displays are more in trending. Designed as a rigid panel with the pencil-thin, nearly imperceptible frames, these screens evoke an ultra-modern vibe and can blend in perfectly with the room architecture and decor. They usually can be mounted in some different ways: recessed flush with the wall, integrated into suspended or cabinetry from the ceiling. Also trending are curved screens and screens with the ability to change the shape through the incorporation of the masking systems.
